Property tax rate by ZIP code
Enter a ZIP code to see its effective property tax rate: the median real estate taxes owner-occupied households report paying, divided by the median value of their homes, from 2020-2024 5-year survey estimates for 32,508 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. Add a home value for a rough estimate of the yearly tax.
What the rate means
An effective rate from survey data: the median of what owner-occupied households report paying in real estate taxes, divided by the median value they report. It is not the county's millage or levy rate and not a tax bill; local rates vary by city, school district and special district, and exemptions (homestead, senior, veteran) change what each owner pays.
ZIP Code Tabulation Areas approximate ZIP code service areas; they follow census blocks, so a ZIP code's edges may differ a little. For a whole county, state or the national ranking, see property tax rates by state.
Questions
How do I find the property tax rate for a ZIP code?
Enter the 5-digit ZIP code above. The lookup shows the effective rate for its ZIP Code Tabulation Area: the median real estate taxes paid by owner-occupied households divided by the median home value, from 2020-2024 5-year survey estimates, next to the national rate.
How do I estimate the property tax on a house by ZIP code?
Type a home value next to the ZIP code: the lookup multiplies it by the ZIP's effective rate. That is a rough estimate of the typical burden. The bill itself is the assessed value times the combined rate of every taxing unit at the address, minus exemptions.
Why is there no figure for my ZIP code?
These figures are estimated for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, which approximate ZIP code areas built from census blocks. PO box ZIP codes and ZIP codes with no owner-occupied homes have none. The county pages give the county's rate.
How accurate is a ZIP code property tax rate?
It is a survey estimate. In a ZIP code with few owner-occupied homes the margin of error is large, and the lookup flags ZIP codes with under 200 owner-occupied homes. Medians above $10,000 in taxes are published as "$10,000+", so the rate shown is then a minimum.
Is this the same as my mill rate?
No. A mill rate is set by each taxing unit and applied to assessed value. The effective rate compares what owners pay with what their homes are worth, so it is comparable between places with different assessment rules.
